Restoring Forests,
Empowering Communities.
Sustaining Forests. Enriching Futures.
American Forestry and Environmental Foundation (AFEF) drives climate-smart forestry projects, community education, and research that protect biodiversity while delivering measurable carbon benefits. We work with landowners, educators, and corporate partners to ensure forests thrive for generations.
Impact That Scales With Nature
Every project is grounded in science, community voice, and long-term stewardship. Explore the growth we have achieved together with donors, volunteers, and partners.
Programs Rooted In Results
From hands-in-the-soil restoration to research-backed climate solutions, our programs connect people, policy, and the planet.
Reforestation & Tree Planting
Strategic reforestation projects rebuild climate-resilient forests with native species, tackling erosion, wildfire recovery, and habitat loss.
- Community-led planting events
- Indigenous stewardship partnerships
- Forest health monitoring
Carbon Smart Forestry
We expand access to high-quality carbon credits that reward sustainable forest management, especially for small landowners.
- Verified carbon accounting
- Revenue sharing with land stewards
- Corporate decarbonization pathways
Research & Innovation
Our research team develops data tools and pilot projects that inform national policy and accelerate climate resilience.
- Forest carbon modeling
- Climate risk assessments
- Open-access datasets
Education & Outreach
Climate literacy starts locally. Our educators bring curricula, storytelling, and skill-building into classrooms and communities.
- School partnerships and toolkits
- Leadership academies for teens
- Trailside interpretation programs
Stories Of Regrowth
Meet the communities turning restoration into reality. We share lessons learned, highlight voices on the ground, and celebrate nature-based solutions that work.
Agrivoltaics In Appalachia
AFEF supported a coalition of landowners and universities exploring how solar farms and tree corridors can co-exist. The project now powers 1,800 homes while restoring migratory bird habitat.
Indigenous Forest Guardians
In partnership with Tribal foresters, we are reconnecting youth to cultural knowledge through prescribed burns, native seed collection, and elder-led storytelling.
-
Louisiana Wetland Revival
Planting cypress and mangrove buffers to shield coastal communities from hurricanes.
-
Urban Canopy Fellows
Launched 12 paid fellowships to map heat islands and design neighborhood tree plans.
-
Forest Finance Accelerator
Created a nationwide cohort of green investors funding carbon-smart forestry startups.
Where We Work
From coastal wetlands to highland forests, AFEF partners with local leaders to restore ecosystems and build climate resilience in regions that need it most.
Regional Hubs
We coordinate regional hubs that deliver training, stewardship, and scientific support tailored to local ecosystems and economies.
- Pacific Northwest – wildfire recovery and carbon innovation
- Southeast – longleaf pine restoration and wetland protection
- Midwest – agroforestry partnerships with family farms
- Mid-Atlantic – urban canopy expansion and community science
